Time to talk about IAPT

Over the next few weeks I'm going to present the results of our survey of 650 IAPT workers in a series of graphics. Each week you'll see a core statistic, some short bullet points about what this statistic means and then some quotes from IAPT workers. This week we look at the simple statistic that 41% of IAPT workers have been asked to manipulate performance data - including recovery rates and waiting times.  

Now, we've been in this movie before and I know that some of you think that I come from the cave-dwelling-school-of-professional-politics, always presenting the same bleak picture just for shits and giggles.

It's probably true that when people see a Surviving Work survey they know a)it will be anonymous b)its a space where they can be critical and c) the shock factor of what's really happening to mental health services will be put to good use. So yes, I think its possible that the closer an IAPT worker is to surviving rather than thriving the more likely they are to take the time to fill in a questionnaire. But I also think that most people working in IAPT are being bullied into silence, and terrified of speaking up.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to build a more balanced picture of the UK's mental health service.  I would say enjoy what follows but you can't really so I'll settle for you reading it and allowing it to influence how you do what you do with a dose of humanity and a bit of anger at how far we have to go to offer decent care.
